David Beckham’s crazy reaction when he found out Messi was joining Inter Miami
David Beckham was as happy as Inter Miami fans when Lionel Messi decided to join them last summer.
David Beckham is the co-owner of Inter Miami, and he managed to pull off the biggest MLS signing of all time. Lionel Messi is one of the greatest football players of all time, and the thought of him joining the MLS seemed impossible. Messi was in PSG last season, and it was expected that he would either join another European team or potentially return to FC Barcelona. After the possibility of returning to FC Barcelona ended, the Argentine shocked the football community by joining Inter Miami from the MLS. The news even shocked David Beckham himself, and he revealed the crazy reaction he had when he found out that Messi would be joining his club in the MLS.
Lionel Messi’s options after PSG were limited because he just wanted to return to FC Barcelona. While the Catalan club struggles financially, the move seemed impossible. Saudi Arabian clubs like Al Hilal were reportedly interested in signing Messi, but the Argentine was more convinced to join the MLS at Inter Miami. On the This Life of Mine with James Corden podcast, Beckham revealed how long the former Manchester United midfielder was looking to sign Messi to Inter Miami.
Beckham said, “We’d been talking to Leo’s father for a long time, five years. Me and my partner in Miami sneaked into a hotel to meet Leo’s dad five years prior to him signing for us. And I said to him ‘I know Leo’s not ready right now but I want your son to play for my club in the future.
David Beckham cried after hearing the news that Messi was joining Inter Miami
Beckham continues to explain how he found out about Messi joining, saying, “Fast forward five years, we knew that month there was a decision to be made because Leo had announced that he was leaving PSG. Four or five in the morning, I’m in bed in Japan, and my phone keeps buzzing.”
“Victoria (Beckham) elbows me and says ‘Turn your phone off, we need to sleep. We’re jetlagged.’ I reach over, put my glasses on, and then see ‘Leo Messi has decided to come to Miami.’ And I get goosebumps now. I sit up in my bed, and I start crying. Victoria is like ‘What’s happened, what’s wrong, who has died?’ And I’m like, ‘Leo’s coming.’ I go online, and it’s all across social media. I then spoke to my partner Jorge, and he said, ‘Can you believe it?'”
