Monkey D. Luffy made manga history by awakening his Devil Fruit in chapter #1044. This transformation, dubbed Gear Five , greatly amplifies Luffy’s elastic qualities, granting him ultimate freedom of form.
However, despite this increased power, Luffy remains vulnerable to slashing attacks, a key weakness that could be exploited by future antagonists to create high-risk conflicts.
Luffy’s New Form and his vulnerability
Luffy’s Gear Five transformation gives him a significant advantage in maneuverability and attack style. However, during his intense fight with Kaido atop the Onigashima Flying Fortress, revealed in chapter #1047, it appeared that this form does not make him invulnerable. Despite greatly increasing his raw power , Kaido managed to maintain his position in the fight, revealing Luffy’s vulnerability to slashing attacks .
Luffy Gear 5 – Limits of Hito hito no Mi
As the nearly unconscious Luffy was propelled into the air by the power of his Gear Fifth , Kaido took this opportunity to attack with a series of slashing blows. This revelation from Kaido highlights that, even with the advanced power of Gear Fifth, Luffy is not as invincible as he appears to be.
This weakness, existing since the beginning of One Piece , has proven to be its downfall on several occasions. It was confirmed once again in Luffy’s recent fight against Admiral Kizaru, where the latter’s attacks with his sword of light clearly injured Luffy, even under the effect of Gear Five.
Who will be able to benefit from it?
This reminiscence of Luffy’s weakness could set the stage for a future antagonist using slashing attacks. Luffy, often described as “the natural enemy of God”, could find Im-sama, the mysterious ruler of the world , the most formidable opponent if he was capable of using powerful cutting techniques.
The dialogues of One Piece’s antagonists have always been crucial in tying together each arc’s themes and building to their climax. Kaido’s mention of Luffy’s weakness to slashing attacks is key to demonstrating that his Gear Five does not make him invincible.
So, the future of One Piece will definitely bring back Gear Five’s weak point to harm Luffy in a crucial moment. All One Piece chapters are available on Manga Plus!
