JAY Blades appeared overcome with emotion whilst working with sisters Fredericka and Louisa Charles who came to The Repair Shop hoping to restore their precious family item.

In the BBC episode, which aired on Tuesday (2 July) but is a rerun from 2022, saw them show a battered and worse for wear looking 1960s radiogram at The Repair Shop.

The piece of furniture was looking damaged, as the two sisters from London explained it significance.

The radiogram had belonged to heir parents, who were part of the Windrush generation and arrived into England after the war to help rebuild the country.

The Windrush Generation were a number of individuals from the Carribbean who were brought to the UK following the end of World War II to help rebuild the country after the devastating effects of the war.

The radiogram was described as being one of the family’s first big purchases, and was mainly used on Sundays as the family came together.

Explaining the story behind it, Louisa and Fredericka added that after their father died in 2013 they would play music on it to remember him.

However they were left devastated when the furniture stopped working in 2019, and they hadn’t been able to get it to play music since.

Jay alongside The Repair Shop experts Mark Stuckey and Sonnaz Nooranvary took the radiogram and lovingly restored it to its former glory.

When the grand reveal came, the sisters broke down in tears after they were able to play a Mona Lisa record by Nat King Cole, which was one of their parents’ favourites.

Fredericka explained that the radiogram brought them “really happy memories” and they were overjoyed to have it restored.

She added: “That transported me right back and all I could see was my mum and my dad.”

A tearful Jay looked on as the sisters were moved by the transformation, as he told the pair: “I can’t thank you enough for bringing it in… and taking me back down memory lane.”

Mark added: “It’s been a real pleasure, it really has. Now, time to enjoy.”

Last month Jay took to Instagram to share a tribute to the Windrush generation and his own great aunt and grandmother.

The post marked the TV presenter breaking his silence since the shock split from his wife earlier this year.
