After Henry Cavill’s abrupt and unfortunate exit as Superman from the DCEU, David Corenswet is set to play the character in James Gunn’s new DCU.

Gunn has deliberately chosen a younger Superman to explore more of the character becoming this eponymous hero and balancing this with being Clark Kent on Earth.

Gunn’s Superman promises to be unique and a complete departure from the tone of Cavill’s dark portrayal of the character.

While Cavill’s Superman used his powers more than showing his actual fighting skills, it looks like Corenswet’s Superman is going to maintain a balance between the two as the makers hired a top stunt double for Corenswet in the film.

James Gunn Hires Justin Howell as David Corenswet’s Stunt Double for Superman

Unlike Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, James Gunn's Superman will be tonally differentUnlike Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, James Gunn’s Superman will be tonally different
With Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Henry Cavill’s Superman was portrayed as a controversial figure, even feared by many people after his cataclysmic fight with General Zod led to innumerable death and destruction.

He mostly shoots laser beams out of his eyes and punches enemies in the air (focusing on his superhuman abilities rather than a grounded fighting style).

With James Gunn and David Corenswet‘s Superman, it seems they are taking a different approach to the character, with respect to his combat style and action sequences. Gunn has hired Justin Howell, who worked on other superhero films like Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder to be Corenswet’s stunt double in the film.

This could most likely mean that Corenswet’s Superman will show his martial arts skills and impeccable fighting abilities (like in the comics) along with his usual superhuman abilities. Fans were ecstatic with the news and expressed their hopes to see a different side of Superman’s skills in the film on X.

The balancing act of showing Superman’s fighting abilities along with his superhuman powers will bring an exciting aspect to Corenswet’s version of Superman. An exhilarating Superman fight sequence similar to Batman’s warehouse fight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be an absolute treat for fans. It remains to be seen how Gunn’s Superman handles the action sequences in the film.

Henry Cavill is currently gearing up for the release of his WWII action comedy film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The film depicts the real-life story of the birth of the covert British organization called the Special Operations Executive, which was instrumental in the victory of the Allied forces against Germany in World War II.

Cavill and his co-stars Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about their experiences shooting the film.

Pettyfer had high praise for Cavill’s dedication and commitment to his role in the film. He also revealed that the Cavill saved him when he fell off a boat and almost drowned while filming one of the film’s scenes. He said,

“He saved me from falling off a boat. I nearly drowned! So, I can officially say I’ve been saved by Henry. And I’m very grateful to be on this film with you.

Gentleman is the right word, for sure. And it’s because he has an unwavering commitment to the cause and energy and consistency and mood.”

The film reunites Cavill and director Guy Ritchie after they collaborated on the 2015 spy comedy The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and will be released on April 19, 2024.

After The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the duo are teaming up yet again for the third time for an untitled action film which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González (via Deadline). The untitled film is set to be released on January 17, 2025.
