The DC fandom is anxiously waiting for James Gunn’s DCU to finally hit the screens. There are a lot of hopes and expectations from the budding cinematic universe, as Gunn slowly cooks up his stories in hushed tones.

Despite the DCEU ending in failure, one of its key elements, its casting choices, remains highly popular even to this day. From Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel to Gal Gadot’s Daughter of Zeus, fans came to revere their on-screen representations.

Of course, who can forget the game-changing portrayal of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in Justice League and his eponymous movie? For decades, the King of Atlantis had been the butt of fish jokes, but Momoa’s rendition left everyone going holy smokes.

And at the time being, Amber Heard seemed to be DC’s best choice to play his wife, the Queen of Atlantis, Mera.

However, as the Depp-Heard trial progressed, we saw less and less of Mera and Amber Heard. A lot of fans linked her disappearance from the films to the trials, and a lot more looked for other actresses to replace her. One of them being MCU’s Elizabeth Olsen.

The DC Universe also features the concept of time travel, butterfly effect, parallel timelines, and the multiverse. And once fans got to know about the ugly side of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s relationship, they felt like the role of Mera should go to another actress.

Given that DC actually introduced all the above-mentioned concepts much earlier in their comics, anything is possible. Getting a new actress to play Mera can be explained as an aftermath of The Flash.

Instagram user SkaiWitch came forth with their own choice, who happens to be Marvel’s Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen. And she looks stunning in the artwork as Mera.

 

With Elizabeth Olsen’s career seemingly over in the MCU after her character’s apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the door stays open for her DCU entry. However, even before Olsen, fans rooted for another MCU alum, Emilia Clarke, to play the green-costumed heroine.

Fans Initially Wanted Emilia Clarke as Mera

Despite loving Jason Momoa‘s role as Aquaman in all his appearances in the DC universe, fans slowly lost all their interest in seeing Amber Heard as Mera.

There were massive campaigns for another famed actress to play the role, one who is known to have shared a great friendship with Momoa.

Jason Momoa rose to fame when he played the ruthless character of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. And the HBO epic wouldn’t have been the same without Emilia Clarke playing Daenerys, Khaleesi, the Mother of Dragons.

The two shared awesome chemistry, and have become friends for life, Momoa even supporting her during her brain aneurysm days. When Warner Bros and James Wan revealed that Heard had less on-screen compatibility with Momoa, fans pointed out that Clarke already had that with him in Game of Thrones.

However, no matter how much we as fans wish, it is all up to James Gunn if he decides to bring back Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Mera along with him in the DCU.

For now, Momoa has not received any calls from the DCU, and there has been no casting news for the King of the Atlantis yet. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best!
