Chris Evans is known for his time as Steve Rogers / Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During his tenure as the star-spangled hero, Evans got an opportunity to work with legendary actor Robert Redford, who had a supporting role in the second installment of the Captain America franchise.

In an interview, Evans spoke about sharing the screen with Redford and also revealed his admiration for the veteran actor. Evans praised Redford for his attitude and work ethic on the sets of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Chris Evans Talked Working With Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In 2013, actor Chris Evans was approaching the peak of his popularity as Captain America, after starring in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and The Avengers (2012). At the time, Evans was working on the then-upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Evans was asked about the film and revealed that Hollywood legend Robert Redford would be appearing in it. Redford appeared in the film as Alexander Pierce, a senior official of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“He’s unbelievable, he’s amazing. I mean, he’s Robert Redford–he’s an icon!”

Evans made the above statement (via Comicbook.com), admitting his admiration for Redford and his work in the 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson. Evans added that the Redford-led film was important to him growing up. As a result, he was initially worried about meeting the veteran actor.

“He showed up on the set for our movie so prepared and so professional and just…it’s like it was his first job. It’s really inspiring.”  

Evans also stated that he had a fantastic working experience with Redford, having admired his work as an actor and director. The Captain America actor admitted that meeting people of Redford’s stature can sometimes be depressing but that wasn’t the case with the veteran actor.

Robert Redford initially rose to prominence as a television actor in the 60s before becoming a film star later in the decade. Redford made his mark as a leading man with films such as Barefoot in the Park (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and Jeremiah Johnson (1972).

Redford also has an Academy Award and two Golden Globes to his name. During a 2013 interview with the LA Times, Redford explained why he agreed to star in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“I’m doing [‘The Winter Soldier’] because it’s different. It’s a new thing for me. I think these films are really powerful. I think they’re great.”

Redford made the above statement praising the MCU and the creative team he collaborated with on the Captain America sequel. He explained that he was excited to explore a new territory with his acting. He also added that it was the kind of film he would have loved to see as a kid. Redford briefly reprised his role in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
