The Kansas City Chiefs general manager, Brett Veach, is quietly making moves to keep the foundation of the team’s front lines intact. On Friday night, NFL insider Mike Garafolo revealed that the Chiefs agreed to extend defensive end Mike Danna‘s stay in Missouri for at least three more years.
It took time for the Kansas City Chiefs to give Danna a steady amount of game experience following his draft in the fifth round of 2020. He had signed a rookie contract worth just over $3.5 million for four years.
2023 was his breakout year, registering 50 tackles while playing 74% of the Chiefs defensive snaps. Moreover, he racked up a career-best 6 1/2 sacks last season, plus seven tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits, en route to winning a second Super Bowl ring.
Mike Danna’s hard work earned him an extension with the Reds. Mike Garafolo shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the Chiefs agreed to pay the Michigan graduate a 3-year, $24 million deal that includes $13 million guaranteed. This was later confirmed by Garafolo’s colleague, Ian Rapoport.

Veach promised that the Chiefs would remain competitive despite losing a few players. To balance it out, he has also successfully negotiated deals with current players. Mike Danna’s defensive partner, Chris Jones, being one of the most senior players in the league, bagged a hefty extension of a five-year $158.75 million contract, including $60 million guaranteed.
However, social media wasn’t expecting Veach to be open-handed with Danna. They pointed out that $24 million, including $13 million guaranteed, is overpaid considering the 26-year-old had only one good season.
Netizens will always find something to be irked about. That doesn’t affect the players that much, especially the bond they share. After Garagolo and Rapoport’s announcement, Chris Jones expressed happiness for his teammate.
Let’s gooooooooooooo!! Y’all in trouble.Chris Jones wrote on X
Clearly, the All-Pro DE was ecstatic with the prospect of starting games alongside Danna for a few more seasons. However, they all gather under Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Spags is a wizard, man. He’s got tons of blitzes, and he knows how to get after a quarterback.Danna said in January
Besides Jones and Danna, the Chiefs also extended the contracts of Tershawn Wharton, Derrick Nnadi, and Mike Pennel. All three received a one-year guaranteed stay in Kansas.
